Glycemic load
calculator.
The index describes the food. The load describes the portion in front of you. This does the second calculation, for the grams you actually ate.
Glycemic load
16.2
◆ Medium
A middle-load portion. Useful when comparing amounts or swaps, not as a personal glucose prediction.
What the load tells you
Glycemic load turns an abstract glycemic index into a portion-aware number: it combines the food’s GI with the available carbohydrate you entered. That makes amounts and swaps easier to compare, while remaining a food calculation rather than a prediction of your personal response.
Glycemic load = (glycemic index × available carbohydrate in grams) ÷ 100
How to read the result
| Glycemic load | Band | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 10 or below | Low | Lower load for the selected food portion |
| 11–19 | Medium | Middle band. Compare the amount and carbohydrate source |
| 20 or above | High | Higher band. Inspect the carbohydrate amount and alternatives |
Why the index alone misleads people
Watermelon has a high glycemic index of around 72. The sugar it contains is absorbed rapidly. On that number alone it looks like a food to avoid. But a 120 g serving contains only about 6 g of available carbohydrate, so its glycemic load is about 4.3, which is low. The carbohydrate is absorbed quickly; there is very little of it.
The reverse happens too. Wholemeal pasta can have a moderate index, while a large portion carries enough carbohydrate for the load to land high. Glycemic load makes that amount visible, which is why it is more useful than GI alone when comparing portions.
What the number does not capture
Everything else on the plate. Fat, protein, fibre, and the rest of a mixed meal can affect digestion and glucose response in ways this simple food calculation does not capture.
Cooking and processing. Pasta cooked al dente has a lower index than the same pasta cooked soft. Cooled and reheated potato behaves differently from freshly boiled.
You. Individual glucose responses to identical meals vary substantially between people, and within the same person depending on sleep, stress and time of day. Published index values are group averages.
That last point is the important one. Glycemic load is a food calculation, not a measurement or forecast of what your body did.
Index values come from the international glycemic index tables and the University of Sydney database; carbohydrate composition from USDA FoodData Central. Where no published value exists for a food, there is no value to substitute. An estimate invented here would not be one.
Questions people
actually ask.
Clear answers about glycemic index, glycemic load and their limits.
What is the difference between glycemic index and glycemic load?+
The index is a property of the food, measured on a fixed 50 g carbohydrate test dose; the load scales that index to the carbohydrate in the portion you actually ate. Index times available carbohydrate divided by 100. That is why two foods with the same index can affect a meal very differently.
What should my glycemic load be per day?+
There is no universal daily glycemic-load target that is appropriate for everyone. Per-serving bands describe the food calculation, not your personal glucose response or a treatment goal. Use an individualized plan if you manage diabetes or another clinical condition.
Is there a free app that can check my glycemic index?+
This calculator is free and needs no account. In 3sense Food, GI and glycemic load appear for a meal or ingredient when data is available; you can inspect ingredient contributions, correct the portion, and immediately see the load update. A missing GI stays unavailable rather than becoming zero.
Does glycemic load predict my blood sugar?+
No. It is published food values and arithmetic on them, not a forecast of your response. Individual glucose responses to identical meals vary substantially between people and within the same person. Anyone selling a personal spike prediction from a published index is overselling it.
How do I lower the glycemic load of a meal without eating less?+
The load falls with the available carbohydrate, so the levers are the portion of the carbohydrate component specifically, and swapping a variety with a lower published index. Fat, protein and fibre elsewhere on the plate slow gastric emptying, which the load does not capture at all. It is calculated per food, not per meal.
What is a good glycemic load for someone with diabetes?+
There is no single app number that is a safe target for everyone with diabetes. Use glycemic load only as food context within the meal plan agreed with a clinician or registered dietitian, and never use it to change insulin or medication.
A calculator answers for one food. The app answers for the plate.
Log and review the meal. When GI and carbohydrate data are available, the app shows glycemic load for the recorded portion, breaks down ingredient contributions, and updates the result when you correct the amount.
